Here’s to raising the professional and personal game. How will you stay ahead?

In today's rapidly evolving professional landscape, staying ahead requires more than just keeping up - it demands a deep understanding of yourself and your changing environment.

If you are unsure of your strengths, now is the time to confront those uncertainties. We are experiencing a paradigm shift.

What is a paradigm shift?

The Merriam-Webster definition is " an important change that happens when the usual way of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and different way."

Knowing your strengths will be critical to helping you navigate and master previously accepted frameworks and fundamental approaches to succeeding professionally and personally.

I've seen marked changes in my industry, and perspectives about moving forward are shifting dramatically. While many are following the crowd, I'm reminded that 'creatives shouldn't all be running in the same direction.' It’s going to take strategic value alignment to pivot. Transformative leadership begins with choosing your courageous path forward.

I'm known for making things happen, and feel very responsible for creating a better impact that will raise the leadership standard.

Sometimes, I feel we've lost our way, forgetting the fundamental values that once gave us purpose and joy. In our rush toward progress, we're forgetting two critical truths:

- That serving others will cost us something

- The difference between “What makes sense versus what makes cents."

As you review 2024, use these Transformation Tips to give you an edge on how to raise the standard for leadership success.

When experiencing a paradigm shift, understanding your strengths becomes crucial for several key reasons:

1. Adaptive Resilience

The familiar landscape of skills, knowledge, and approaches becomes disrupted during a paradigm shift. Knowing your core strengths allows you to:

- Identify transferable skills that remain valuable. What skills are not specific to your job or task but broadly useful in various professional and personal contexts? What skills do you possess that are absolute strengths, giving you versatility and adaptability? Use them to stay one step ahead!

- Adapt more quickly by leveraging your innate capabilities. Revisit what you do without deliberate practice. I have an uncanny ability to inspire and motivate others effortlessly. Are you able to remain calm and composed in stressful situations? Your natural capacity for mental toughness will contribute to your leadership and team success.

- Maintain confidence during uncertain transitions. When you've experienced significant transitions in your life or work, what core strengths have helped you maintain confidence? I lean into my core values. They remind me of my purpose, which refuels my reason to rebound with excellence. Understanding your ‘why’ can provide resilience for your ‘how.’

2. Strategic Repositioning

Understanding your strengths enables you to:

- Reframe your existing competencies within the new paradigm. Your skills are not just what you know but how you creatively and flexibly apply what you know. It’s a dynamic process. How can you map existing skills to the emerging needs that are knocking at your door? This process is called translational thinking. Are you allowing yourself to be agile enough to develop creative connections by reflecting on past victories?

- Identify unique opportunities that align with your core capabilities. What core competencies make a particular skill valuable? How can you repurpose and reimagine a core competency? I've recently seen how my ability to absorb and analyze information is helping sharpen my role as a university professor. This unique value proposition is an exciting new opportunity that has repurposed my strategic thinking and leadership skills. Get a head start on bridging existing knowledge with emerging challenges you're presently experiencing.

- Develop targeted strategies for learning and growth. Are there any projects in your professional or personal sphere of influence that can purposefully stretch your strengths? Create a customized learning ecosystem filled with diverse learning sources, professional networks, mentoring relationships, and peer learning groups. I stepped out this year and developed a broader network of mentors. This strategy has really given me confidence and eliminated the imposter syndrome that plagued my life for many years. I remember hearing a voice inside telling me, “It's not that you’re not smart enough to do it; it's just that you didn't have the access to learn how.” I was unstoppable once I created a holistic, adaptive environment that nurtured my intellectual, spiritual, and professional growth.

- Position yourself advantageously in emerging contexts. Look at where we are right now. We are in the early stages of paradigm shifts all around. Is your industry in transition? What technological and social changes are affecting your workplace and sector? How can you become a translator between the old and new paradigms in your sphere of influence? I have begun to create value through meaningful discussions by being proactive rather than reactive. I want to shape emerging context rather than just respond to it. Do you see a high-growth area in your field? Build your authority in those evolving spaces.

3. Psychological Anchoring

During significant change, your strengths serve as:

- A psychological foundation of stability. Realize that your strengths exist regardless of your present job or role. They help to anchor your identity. They are a significant part of your resilience and coping toolkit. How have your strengths given you clarity in uncertain times? Have you used them to take confident action in recent new situations? Reflect on how they've guided you in making authentic, courageous choices. Was there an approach that you took that surprised you? I'm reminded that no matter the challenge I face, there will always be an inner belief that rises inside of me to assure me the glass is half full. That inner compass provides stability and helps move me into my next strategic risk-taking adventure.

- A source of self-assurance. My year has been filled with enormous challenges - lots of firsts. I'd say these opportunities gave me a considerable boost of competence confidence. Did you receive a surge of self-assurance this year? It's not too late. How can you expand your comfort zone? First, get out your journal and identify patterns in your most triumphant moments. Now, list two new skills that you can layer on established ones. Broadening self-awareness of your strengths will build your confidence. Clarity of your strengths will illuminate your natural direction. Remember, purposeful action will ignite self-assurance.

- A reference point for personal and professional reinvention. Your strengths create a launchpad for transformation. Think of them as your personal north star during times of change. This year taught me that reinvention isn't about becoming someone new - it's about leveraging who I already am in fresh ways. Have you considered how your existing strengths could open unexpected doors? I discovered that my ability to simplify complex ideas wasn't just valuable for business - it became invaluable in teaching and mentoring others. What hidden applications of your strengths are waiting to be uncovered? List three ways you could apply your core strengths in entirely new contexts. Remember, authentic reinvention builds on your foundation rather than trying to construct a wholly new one.

- A mechanism for maintaining self-worth amid disruption. In times of significant change, it's easy to feel destabilized or question your value. This moment is where understanding your intrinsic strengths becomes your anchor. They remind you that your worth isn't tied to a particular role, title, or circumstance - it's embedded in who you are and what you bring to the table. When facing disruption, I've learned to ask myself: "What fundamental strengths do I possess that transcend this current challenge?" This simple question shifts focus from external chaos to internal certainty. Have you noticed how your core strengths have remained reliable even when everything else seemed uncertain? That's not a coincidence—that's your authentic power shining through.

As we navigate this paradigm shift, remember that your strengths are more than just skills - they are your survival toolkit, your innovation engine, and your foundation for growth. The key isn't just identifying and knowing these strengths but having the courage to be flexible and creative about applying them in radically changing environments.

The future belongs to those who can adapt while staying true to their core capabilities. What strengths will you leverage to create your next chapter of success?

Remember, YOU are the strategic advantage!
